The Bill to Amend and Consolidate the Laws Relating to the Press Council, 2083 has been forwarded to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs for feedback.

Prepared by the Ministry of Information and Communication, the proposed legislation aims to protect press and freedom of expression while upholding professional journalistic standards.

What the bill proposes

The bill seeks to make the media sector more credible, dignified and accountable through self-regulation. It also proposes making the Press Council more autonomous and empowered.

Under the proposal, violations of the code of conduct could attract fines of up to Rs 100,000.
