The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended that the government pay royalist leader Navraj Subedi Rs 12,500 in compensation for keeping him under illegal house arrest for 25 days after the March 28, 2025, incident at Tinkune.
In an investigation report made public on Wednesday, the Commission said Subedi, an 85-year-old senior citizen, was confined at his residence without a warrant. It calculated the recommended compensation at Rs 500 for each day of detention.
NHRC recommends compensation and caution
Along with the compensation, the Commission recommended that the then Chief District Officer be cautioned over the incident.
The report concluded that Subedi’s confinement at his own home was unlawful. He was held for 25 days following the Tinkune incident on March 28, 2025, also known as Chaitra 15, 2081, in the Nepali calendar.
Compensation based on 25 days of detention
The recommended amount of Rs 12,500 reflects the Commission’s calculation of Rs 500 per day for the full 25-day period. The recommendation was included in the NHRC’s investigation report.
