The Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention has begun in Kathmandu, with preparations completed by the faction led by party president Gagan Kumar Thapa. The gathering is taking place amid unresolved disputes over party leadership and the convention’s legitimacy.
Former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba declined an invitation to attend, according to leader Prakash Sharan Mahat. The Deuba faction has been preparing to hold a parallel convention.
Party seeks unanimous leadership selection
Nepali Congress spokesperson Devaraj Chalise said efforts would be made to select the party’s leadership unanimously. However, disagreements between the factions remain unresolved as the convention gets underway.
Thapa has said the convention will proceed as scheduled. Reports on the preparations and the party president’s position are available from Nepal Press, Nagarik News and Ratopati.
