Nepal to Fast-Track Law Amendment for Death Registration of Missing Disaster Victims

Nepal’s Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has decided to fast-track amendments to existing laws to ease the declaration and registration of deaths of people who went missing in climate change-induced disasters.

The ministry said current legal provisions are inadequate for declaring missing citizens dead and registering their deaths. The amendment process is being advanced in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Legal changes to address gaps

The decision was discussed at a meeting held on Tuesday at Singha Durbar. The proposed amendments are intended to make it easier to complete death declarations and registrations for people who remain missing after disasters linked to climate change.

The move focuses on addressing gaps in existing laws that have complicated the process for families seeking formal recognition of a missing person’s death.
