Nepal is moving to tighten controls on unauthorised vehicle modifications and substandard safety equipment, including helmets and seatbelts, as part of efforts to reduce road accidents.
The Road Safety Bill, 2083, presented in the federal parliament, proposes giving the National Road Safety Council authority to monitor and evaluate vehicle modification, production, import and body building. It also provides for monitoring and regulating these activities and making necessary reforms.
Proposed road safety oversight
Under the bill, the council would have a role in overseeing vehicle-related activities, including modifications and body building. The proposed measures also address the use of safety equipment that does not meet required standards, such as helmets and seatbelts.
The proposals are intended to strengthen oversight of vehicle changes and safety gear as part of the government’s effort to reduce road accidents.
