The Election Commission of Nepal has discussed the possibility of internet voting and the technology needed to support election management. The discussion took place at a presentation, technology demonstration and interaction programme in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
Chief Election Commissioner Man Bahadur Karki said the commission would move ahead toward internet, or electronic, voting in the coming days. Participants said preparations must address technological readiness as well as the institutions and security measures required to operate such a system.
Priorities for internet voting
Participants stressed that the following areas should be prioritised for implementation:
- Technological preparation
- Development of institutional capacity
- Cybersecurity
- Coordination among relevant agencies
The programme also covered the use of information and communication technology in election management. The commission’s presentation and demonstration focused on internet voting technology and its potential application in the electoral process.
Readiness remains central
The discussion highlighted that moving toward internet voting involves more than adopting technology. Participants pointed to the need for coordinated preparation and stronger institutional capability alongside cybersecurity measures.
