A bill presented in Nepal’s federal parliament proposes making it an offence for airlines to charge passengers more than approved airfares. Under the proposed provision, carriers could face fines of up to Rs 1.5 million for overcharging.
The measure is included in Clause 47 of a bill to amend and consolidate laws relating to the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority. It aims to curb airlines selling tickets at arbitrary prices during festivals, emergencies and disasters.
Proposed penalties for airfare overcharging
The bill would allow strict legal and financial action against airlines found charging above approved rates. The proposed fine of up to Rs 1.5 million is intended to address cases in which passengers are charged excessive fares during periods of heightened demand or crisis.
Bill remains a proposal
The provision is part of legislation presented to the federal parliament and is proposed, not an enacted penalty. The bill’s stated aim is to protect passengers from airlines exploiting festivals, emergencies or disasters by setting arbitrary ticket prices.
