The Nepal Bar Association has strongly objected to the Judicial Council’s recommendation of four judges for appointment to the Supreme Court, saying it failed to follow constitutional provisions and key standards for judicial appointments.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, senior advocate Kedar Prasad Koirala, the Association said the recommendation ignored the quota for legal practitioners provided under Article 129(5) of the Constitution and the principle of proportional inclusion under Article 42(1).
Bar raises concerns over selection standards
The Association also said the recommended candidates did not meet standards it considers essential for appointment to the Supreme Court, including:
- Seniority and experience
- Subject knowledge and efficiency
- Honesty and impartiality
- Professional and ethical conduct
The Judicial Council made the recommendation on Wednesday.
