More than 700 people were arrested by police during a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Thursday. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest was launched by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), with members of opposition parties, student organisations and Youth Congress also taking part.
Arrests and metro station closures
Reports gave different figures for those taken into custody. Onlinekhabar reported that more than 700 people were arrested, while Ratopati reported that over 100 protesters were detained. Ratopati also reported that 11 metro stations were closed.
