Minister Sobita Gautam Says Criminal Cases Cannot Be Settled Through Mediation

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobita Gautam said criminal cases cannot be settled through mediation under any circumstances. She warned that anyone who settles a criminal case through mediation would be punishable under the law.

Gautam made the remarks on Monday at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee at Singha Durbar. She was responding to questions during theoretical discussions on the Mediation (Second Amendment) Bill.

Minister’s remarks on criminal cases

Gautam stressed that mediation cannot be used to settle criminal cases. Her comments addressed questions raised by committee members as they discussed the bill.

She said a person who settles a criminal case through mediation would face punishment under the law.
