Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel has directed Lumbini Buddhist University to prioritise the study, teaching and research of Buddhist philosophy while maintaining its distinct identity.
Pokharel, who is also the university’s co-chancellor, gave the direction during an inspection visit to the university in Rupandehi on Friday. He said its academic programmes should be gradually oriented towards Buddhist philosophy in line with the institution’s founding objective.
Government plans to refocus academic programmes
Pokharel said the government plans to focus the university’s current academic programmes on Buddhist philosophy. The direction calls for the university to:
- Give greater priority to Buddhist philosophy in its study and teaching.
- Strengthen research in the field.
- Preserve the university’s distinct identity while gradually orienting its programmes towards its founding objective.
