Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has urged citizens to pay their electricity bills through digital channels, noting that 73 percent of customers still pay at physical counters.

The Ministry of Energy says the government spends Rs 600 million annually just to collect electricity tariffs. Shrestha made the appeal in Kathmandu as digital technology continues to develop rapidly.

According to the figures cited in the appeal, nearly three-quarters of citizens continue to pay their electricity bills in person. The government’s annual collection cost highlights the expense associated with counter-based payments.

Call to use digital payment methods

Shrestha encouraged citizens to use digital means to pay their bills. The appeal comes amid rapid advances in digital technology.
