Doctors and health workers in Karnali Province have protested the provincial government's decision to halt an incentive allowance for medical staff working under scholarship contracts. The allowance had been provided to staff serving at hospitals across the province for the past seven years, but was stopped from this year.
The protests have spread to districts including Surkhet and Salyan. According to Nagarik News, a planned strike was postponed after the provincial government agreed to provide the allowances.
Dispute over the incentive allowance
The protest centres on the decision to end a payment that had been made to doctors and health workers under scholarship contracts. Staff serving in hospitals across Karnali had received the incentive for seven years before it was halted this year.
The issue has prompted protests among health workers in multiple districts, including Surkhet and Salyan. The provincial government's reported agreement to provide the allowance led to the postponement of the planned strike.
