Two members of Nepal’s Judicial Council have registered dissent over its recommendation of four candidates for appointment as Supreme Court justices, according to council secretariat sources.
Senior-most justice and council member Sapana Pradhan Malla wrote a note of dissent against all four recommendations during Tuesday’s council meeting, citing procedural grounds. Fellow member Mahesh Nepal objected to the third and fourth names.
Disagreement over the recommendations
The council secretariat sources said the recommendations were made despite seniority being bypassed. Malla opposed all four recommendations, while Nepal’s objections were limited to two candidates.
The dissent was recorded as the council considered recommendations for appointments to the Supreme Court.
