A landslide at Gagane Khola in Shubhakalika Rural Municipality-1, Kalikot, has blocked the Karnali Highway and disrupted traffic on the Surkhet-Jumla route. Vehicles travelling between Jumla, Kalikot and Dailekh and Surkhet have been stranded on the road.
The latest disruption followed rainfall from Ashoj 9 to 11, which triggered landslides and halted movement through the area for three days. Gagane Khola is a long-known landslide-prone stretch where even normal rainfall can trigger mudslides.
Landslide-prone section continues to disrupt travel
Landslides at Gagane Khola have disrupted journeys for residents of Karnali for years. Rainfall can send mud onto the road, repeatedly interrupting traffic along the highway.
Gabion net failed to hold back slope
A gabion wire net installed by the Jumla Road Division two years ago at a cost of 30 million rupees was swept away and failed to hold back the slope.
The latest closure has left vehicles travelling on the route stranded, disrupting road access for people moving between the Karnali districts and Surkhet.
