Trade between Nepal and China through all three major northern border points has come to a standstill after floods and landslides blocked the roads leading to them, according to reports. The disruption has stranded goods worth billions on the roads and is affecting consumers, businesses and government revenue collection.
The shutdown comes during the festival season, when demand for goods typically rises. Shortages and increasing prices are adding to the impact on consumers.
Flood damage shuts key checkpoints
The Rasuwagadhi checkpoint in Rasuwa was completely destroyed by a Bhotekoshi flood on Bhadra 10, the reports said. The older Tatopani checkpoint in Sindhupalchok has remained closed since Bhadra 12.
Road blockages caused by floods and landslides have also halted trade through the third major northern border point. The reports do not specify when routes to the checkpoints will reopen.
Stranded goods and revenue impact
With trade halted, goods worth billions remain stranded on the roads. The disruption has contributed to shortages and rising prices for consumers, while also affecting government revenue collection.
The continued closure of the routes has left trade through Nepal's three major northern border points at a standstill.
