Round-trip airfares from Delhi and Mumbai to Kathmandu have risen to more than 80,000 rupees ahead of Dashain, more than three times their usual cost of around 25,000 to 30,000 rupees.
Airlines have attributed the steep increase to the festive season, the tourist season and heavy passenger demand. Domestic fares have also climbed, with a one-way ticket from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi priced at 22,180 rupees.
International fares surge ahead of Dashain
The rise in fares is affecting travelers planning to fly from India to Nepal during the busy holiday period. Tickets on the Delhi and Mumbai routes, which normally cost around 25,000 to 30,000 rupees for a round trip, are now exceeding 80,000 rupees.
Airlines cited increased passenger pressure, along with the festive and tourist seasons, as reasons for the higher prices.
Domestic flights also cost more
Airfares within Nepal have risen abnormally as well. A one-way Kathmandu-Dhangadhi ticket has been set at 22,180 rupees, making a flight to Delhi cheaper than a domestic flight to Dhangadhi, according to the reported fares.
