Climate Victims Urge Nepal to Prioritise Climate Justice in New Policy

People affected by climate change are demanding that climate justice be prioritised in Nepal’s new climate policy, according to reports from Kathmandu. The call focuses on who bears the losses caused by climate impacts and who is responsible for causing them.

Writing in The Rising Nepal, Pabitra Guragain argued that climate justice requires accountability and recognition of the voices of affected communities. The demand also includes compensation from the international community, as reported by Ratopati.

Calls for accountability and recognition

The demand is for climate policy to address more than the impacts themselves. It should also recognise affected communities and consider how responsibility for climate-induced losses is shared.

Key concerns raised include:

  • Prioritising climate justice in Nepal’s new climate policy
  • Holding those responsible for climate-related harm accountable
  • Recognising the voices of communities affected by climate impacts
  • Addressing who bears the losses and who is responsible for causing them
