Businessman Nabin Basnet has been arrested in connection with a red sandalwood smuggling case from 13 years ago, according to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). CIB AIG Uma Chaturvedi said Basnet was arrested on Friday night.
Reports differ on the precise location of the arrest. One report said he was held at the Marriott Hotel, while others placed the arrest in Bhaktapur or at his home in Pepsi-Cola.
Why the case was revived
Basnet had not been prosecuted earlier because his citizenship details were not disclosed, according to reports. The case was revived after the Department of Money Laundering Investigation raided his home and found records related to it.
The CIB arrested him in connection with the old smuggling case. The available reports did not provide further details about the alleged smuggling or the next steps in the case.
