Budhigandaki River Crosses Danger Level, Flood Risk Extends to Muglin

The Budhigandaki River has risen above the danger level at Arughat, prompting Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division to warn of a high risk of flooding downstream as far as Muglin, including the Benighat area. The Division has urged people in high-risk locations to move immediately to safer, higher ground and stay away from riverbanks until the flood threat passes. The Trishuli River down to Benighat also remains at extremely high risk, while residents living near rivers in Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts have been asked to remain alert.

Flood warning along the Budhigandaki

The alert follows the Budhigandaki’s rise above the danger level at Arughat. The Division has identified the stretch of river toward Muglin, including Benighat, as an area facing a high risk of flooding. The warning places residents near the river in those locations on notice to act promptly rather than wait for conditions to worsen.

People in high-risk areas have been advised to leave for safer, higher ground immediately. The Division has also asked residents to keep away from riverbanks until the flood passes. These precautions apply to people in areas exposed to the Budhigandaki warning, where the river’s rise has led authorities to urge an immediate response.

Trishuli and nearby districts remain at risk

The warning also covers the Trishuli River downstream to Benighat, where the risk remains extremely high. Residents near the river should stay alert to conditions and follow safety instructions, particularly because the alert describes the risk along this stretch as more severe than a general flood watch.

The Division has separately asked people living near rivers in Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts to remain alert. The advisory extends beyond the Budhigandaki and Trishuli river stretches specifically named in the warning, underscoring the need for residents in river-adjacent areas of those districts to pay attention to changing conditions.

What residents are being asked to do

For people in high-risk locations, the main instruction is to move immediately to safer, higher ground. Residents should not remain on riverbanks while the flood threat persists. The Division has not said in the warning where people should go, so those affected should heed local safety directions and avoid approaching the river to check water levels.

The alert does not specify when the danger will pass. Residents have therefore been urged to stay away from the riverbanks until the flood threat has subsided and to remain alert to further updates. People in the warned areas should treat the advice as time-sensitive, especially in the Budhigandaki corridor toward Muglin and along the Trishuli downstream to Benighat.

The immediate concern is the Budhigandaki’s rise above the danger level at Arughat and the resulting high flood risk downstream. With the Trishuli also assessed as being at extremely high risk down to Benighat, the Division’s message is to prioritize distance from riverbanks and move to higher ground where the risk is high. Residents near rivers in Chitwan and Nawalparasi have also been asked to stay alert as the warning remains in effect.
