982 Drivers Penalised for Drink- and Drug-Driving in Kathmandu Valley in 13 Days

Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police penalised 982 drivers for driving under the influence during the 13 days from Ghatasthapana to Kartik 6, the office said. The total included 947 drivers penalised for drink-driving, locally known as maapase, and 35 penalised for driving after consuming drugs, known as laapase. Among the drink-driving cases, 59 involved drivers of public vehicles, according to office spokesperson Superintendent of Police Nareshraj Subedi.

Drink-driving cases made up most of the total

Drink-driving accounted for the large majority of the cases reported by the traffic police. The 947 maapase cases represented about 96 per cent of the 982 penalties, while the 35 laapase cases made up the remaining roughly 4 per cent. The two figures together account for the full total given by the office for the 13-day reporting period.

The figures show that the recorded drink-driving cases outnumbered drug-driving cases by more than 27 to one. They describe penalties imposed during this specific period in Kathmandu Valley, rather than a year-long total. The office’s figures do not provide a comparison with another period, so they do not establish whether the number of cases rose or fell over time.

Public vehicle drivers among those penalised

Of the 947 drink-driving cases, 59 involved drivers of public vehicles. That is approximately 6 per cent of the drink-driving total. The remaining 888 drink-driving cases involved drivers who were not identified in the reported figures as public vehicle drivers. The information provided does not give a separate breakdown of public vehicle drivers among the 35 drug-driving cases.

The inclusion of public vehicle drivers is a distinct detail within the overall count. However, the figures do not identify the types of public vehicles involved, where individual drivers were stopped, or the circumstances of each case. They also do not specify how many of the penalised drivers were involved in each category beyond the stated totals. The reported count should therefore be read as a summary of enforcement cases, not as a detailed profile of drivers or incidents.

Reporting period and figures

The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office’s count covers 13 days, beginning on Ghatasthapana and ending on Kartik 6. Subedi provided the figures on behalf of the office. The reporting period is identified using the Nepali calendar dates given in the announcement; the figures do not separately list daily totals or provide a day-by-day account of the enforcement activity.

The headline total combines two categories: 947 penalties for drink-driving and 35 for driving after drug consumption. Within the drink-driving category, 59 cases involved public vehicle drivers. These details clarify what is included in the total while keeping the scope of the figures precise: they relate to the 13-day period reported by traffic police in Kathmandu Valley and do not, on their own, describe trends beyond that window.
