Seven in 10 people in Nepal frequently struggle to pay housing costs, according to a new global study by Habitat for Humanity International. The figure is more than double the global average of 34 percent, the report says.
The study, titled “Home at What Cost?”, draws on nationally representative surveys. It also found that an equal share of Nepalis worry that a single setback in their lives could put their homes at risk.
Housing insecurity and its impact
The report highlights the severe financial and health trade-offs associated with housing insecurity in Nepal. Its findings point to widespread concern about both the cost of housing and the possibility of losing housing stability after an unexpected setback.
The results place Nepal well above the global average for people who frequently find housing costs difficult to manage, underscoring the scale of the affordability challenge identified by the study.
