A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Panama on Friday, sending tremors as far as Panama City and damaging buildings, roads and bridges in various places, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at 1:56 pm local time, the USGS said. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake occurred at 11:26 pm Indian Standard Time.
Tsunami threat and aftershock warning
The US Embassy in Panama warned of possible aftershocks and a potential tsunami threat across nine countries in Central and South America. The available information did not name the countries covered by the warning.
Authorities warned residents to remain alert as the region faced the possibility of further seismic activity.
