US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Iceland on Monday as the United States increases its economic and security interest in the Arctic region, according to the US State Department.
The department said the visit will focus on economic and security cooperation. It comes amid growing attention to the strategic importance of the Arctic.
Greenland security agreement
Rubio’s visit comes two weeks after the United States, Denmark and Greenland reached a security agreement. Under the agreement, the United States will establish two new military bases in Greenland.
The agreement and Rubio’s planned trip to Iceland come as Washington pursues closer cooperation on Arctic security and economic interests.
