Shankar Pokharel Accuses Government of Moving Toward Authoritarianism

CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has accused the current government of moving toward arbitrary rule and an authoritarian path, saying its actions show a disregard for the constitution and the law.

Speaking at a program organized by the UML Bagmati Province Contact Committee in Kathmandu on Saturday, Pokharel criticized the arrest of people without sufficient facts and evidence. He also pointed to the dismissal of security personnel for meeting detained individuals as evidence of what he described as the government’s failure to follow legal and constitutional principles.

Pokharel’s criticism of government actions

Pokharel said arrests made without adequate evidence and action against security personnel who meet detainees reflected an arbitrary approach to governance.

His remarks were reported on October 10, 2026. The accusations were made by Pokharel at the UML-organized program and were not presented as independently verified findings.
