Nepal and Pacific Islands Face Shared Climate Crisis, Says Foreign Minister Khanal

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said Nepal and the small island nations of the Pacific face the same ecological crisis driven by climate change, despite being geographically distant from one another.

Addressing the high-level Leaders Plenary at the Pre-COP Leaders Event in Fiji, Khanal highlighted the deep connection between the Himalayas and the oceans. He also drew attention to the risks facing high mountain regions.

Himalayas and oceans are interconnected

Khanal’s remarks emphasized that climate change links regions with very different landscapes. Nepal’s high mountain environment and the Pacific’s small island nations are geographically far apart, but both face ecological challenges associated with the changing climate.

Risks to high mountain regions

The Foreign Minister also highlighted the risks facing high mountain areas, underlining the need to consider the climate challenges affecting the Himalayas alongside those confronting island nations.
