More Than 700 Chyangra Arrive at Kalanki Ahead of Dashain

More than 700 mountain goats, known as chyangra, have arrived at the Kalanki livestock market in Kathmandu Valley as Dashain approaches, with additional animals still being brought in from different places. Jeevanraj Khatiwada, chairman of the Kalanki livestock buying and selling centre, said chyangra are being collected from various locations and transported to the Valley for the festival. Goats and he-goats from different districts have also begun arriving, while prices for both have risen.

Chyangra supplies increase ahead of the festival

The arrival of more than 700 chyangra marks a growing flow of livestock into the Kalanki market ahead of Dashain. The number is not final: more mountain goats are still coming, according to the market centre’s chairman. Khatiwada said animals are being gathered from different places and brought to Kathmandu Valley to meet the festival-period demand.

The arrivals are part of a wider movement of livestock to the market. Goats and he-goats are also coming from various districts, adding to the animals available for buyers as preparations for Dashain continue. The reported supply includes chyangra as well as other goats, although no total number for those animals has been provided.

The market’s activity typically picks up from Fulpati onward, according to the information provided by the centre’s chairman. Fulpati is an important point in the Dashain period, and the increase in market activity around then reflects the timing of livestock sales for the festival. The current arrivals are taking place as the market prepares for that busier period.

Prices rise as livestock reaches Kalanki

Prices of goats and he-goats have increased, the market report says. No specific prices, rate of increase or comparison with previous years were provided. The reported rise applies to goats and he-goats; a separate price for chyangra was not specified.

The combination of new arrivals and higher prices is shaping the current livestock trade at Kalanki. Animals are being transported from different places and districts, while further arrivals are expected as the festival gets closer. However, the available information does not give details about the number of traders, the pace of sales or how prices may change in the coming days.

Khatiwada’s account places Kalanki at the centre of this seasonal movement, with the livestock buying and selling centre receiving animals brought in for Dashain. More than 700 chyangra have already reached the market, but the continuing inflow means the reported figure is only a count of arrivals so far. The market’s activity is expected to gather pace from Fulpati, while goat and he-goat prices have already risen.

For now, the key developments at Kalanki are the arrival of chyangra from various places, the entry of goats and he-goats from different districts and higher prices for the latter categories. The centre has not provided further figures on total supply or prices, leaving the scale of the full festival-period market to become clearer as more livestock arrives and activity increases.
