The Koshi Province Assembly has unanimously passed its new Province Assembly Operation Rules of Procedure, ending about four years of deadlock since the start of the assembly’s second term. The rules were approved at a meeting in Biratnagar on Saturday, before the ninth session concluded.
Draft committee chairperson Rewatiraman Bhandari presented the rules to the assembly. Their passage came after the CPN-UML softened its position, clearing a path for a possible change to Koshi Province’s name.
Rules passed unanimously
The assembly endorsed the new procedures without opposition. The rules had remained unresolved for about four years after the second term began.
The unanimous vote brings the prolonged impasse over the assembly’s operating rules to an end.
Possible path to province name change
The passage of the rules is expected to make it possible for the assembly to consider changing the province’s name. CPN-UML’s softened stance helped clear the way for the rules to be approved.
