India’s Supreme Court has sought responses from the government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) over a decision to carry out a widespread revision of the voter roll.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant issued notices on Monday to the government, the ECI and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while hearing a petition alleging irregularities in the revision process.
Challenge to voter roll revision
The petition raises concerns about how the voter roll revision is being conducted. The court has asked the government and election authorities to respond to the allegations.
Opposition parties and rights activists have also opposed the revision process.
