The government says it will soon begin the process to fill two vacant seats in Nepal’s National Assembly. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobita Gautam made the statement during Thursday’s National Assembly meeting while responding on behalf of Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
Gautam said suitable persons would be recommended, taking into account inclusiveness, merit, contribution to national life and the dignity of the National Assembly.
Process for the vacant seats
The two vacancies include an elected member’s seat and a seat in the quota nominated by the President, according to Gautam’s remarks.
- The Election Commission will proceed under existing law to fill the vacant elected member’s seat.
- The government will recommend suitable persons for the vacant positions, with the stated criteria guiding the process.
Gautam also addressed the presidential nomination quota as part of her response on filling the vacancies.
