Deuba Faction Begins Parallel Nepali Congress Convention With Ward Assemblies

The Sher Bahadur Deuba faction of the Nepali Congress has launched a parallel process for the party’s 15th general convention, beginning with ward assemblies from Ashoj 15. The faction has scheduled its central convention for Mangsir 21-23, according to reports on its preparations and notice to the Election Commission.

Former party general secretary Dr. Shashank Koirala is coordinating the convention. The faction has appointed coordinators in dozens of districts, named election officers and set nomination fees for candidates. It has also submitted its convention calendar to the Election Commission.

Parallel convention process gathers support

Leaders close to Shekhar Koirala are joining the parallel convention, while the party’s establishment side, led by president Gagan Thapa, is preparing a separate convention.

The faction has also assigned district-level responsibilities as it organizes the convention. Reports identified appointments related to preparations in Okhaldhunga, including a coordinator selected by the Shashank Koirala-led organizing committee.
