Ahead of the festival season, the District Police Office, Chitwan has tightened security checks on the district’s main roads, at bus parks and in inner areas, targeting the movement of narcotics, explosive materials and illegal goods while taking steps to reduce possible crime and road accidents. Checks have been intensified at the central bus park, Gondrang and other locations used by vehicles arriving from outside the district as well as local vehicles.
Checks intensified at transport hubs and roads
Police have stepped up monitoring at places where vehicles and passengers move through the district, including the central bus park and Gondrang. The measures also cover other points used by both outside and local vehicles. The increased checks are intended to control the movement of prohibited or illegal items as festival travel and activity approach.
The District Police Office has identified narcotics, explosive materials and illegal goods among the items targeted by the operation. The checks are part of the district’s wider effort to limit opportunities for crime during the festival period. Police have also extended the security focus beyond transport hubs to the district’s main roads and inner areas.
The measures are not limited to searching for illegal goods. Police are also enforcing road-safety rules, with action being taken against speeding, drink driving - known locally as maapase - and drug driving, or laapase. These offences are among the behaviours officers are targeting to help prevent crashes.
Road safety and crime prevention
By combining checks for illegal items with enforcement against risky driving, police are addressing both public-safety concerns identified ahead of the festivals. The operation covers the movement of vehicles through busy transport locations as well as driving conduct on the roads. The District Police Office has said checks have been made stricter at key locations, including the central bus park and Gondrang.
The festival-season arrangements are intended to reduce possible crime and road accidents, while limiting the transport of narcotics, explosives and other illegal goods. Police action against speeding, drink driving and drug driving forms part of the road-safety effort. The checks are under way across main roads, bus parks and inner areas of Chitwan as the district prepares for the festival period.
