Brazil's presidential election will go to a runoff after right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro led the first round, beating incumbent left-wing President Lula da Silva but failing to secure enough votes for an outright victory.
Bolsonaro received 47% of the vote, while Lula won 45.2%, according to figures reported by Ratopati. A candidate needed more than 50% to win in the first round, the BBC reported. The runoff between the two candidates is scheduled for 25 October.
Who is Flavio Bolsonaro?
Flavio Bolsonaro is the son of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for masterminding a failed coup attempt after losing an election.
