Two Arrested in Baglung for Robbing Elderly Woman's Gold Necklace

Police in Baglung have arrested two persons on the charge of robbing a gold necklace worn by a 70-year-old woman, the District Police Office, Baglung, has confirmed. The robbery took place at Hallanchowk in Baglung Municipality Ward No. 2, and both suspects were taken into custody from within Baglung Municipality. The information was made public by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rameshwar Twati, the information officer at the District Police Office, Baglung. One of those arrested has been identified as 19-year-old Rabin Kumar of Birgunj Metropolitan City Ward No. 20 in Parsa district.

The Robbery at Hallanchowk

According to the District Police Office, the elderly woman was at Hallanchowk when the gold necklace she was wearing was robbed from her. Hallanchowk falls under Ward No. 2 of Baglung Municipality, the local unit that serves as the administrative and commercial hub of the district.

Baglung, a hilly district in Gandaki Province, centres much of its daily trade and public activity in and around the municipality's bazaar areas. Neighbourhoods such as Hallanchowk combine residential streets with market spaces, where people moving on foot commonly wear gold ornaments as part of everyday life.

Police have not released the victim's name, nor have they disclosed the precise sequence of events surrounding the snatching. Details such as whether the necklace has been recovered were also not immediately available.

Two Held, One Named as 19-Year-Old from Birgunj

The arrests were announced by DSP Rameshwar Twati, who acts as the spokesperson for police activities in the district through his role as information officer. According to him, both suspects were apprehended from Baglung Municipality, the same local unit where the robbery occurred.

Of the two, police have so far named only Rabin Kumar, a 19-year-old resident of Birgunj Metropolitan City Ward No. 20 in Parsa district. Birgunj, a major border city in the Terai plains, lies a considerable distance from the hill district, and police have not commented on how or when the accused came to be in Baglung.

The second suspect's identity has not been made public. It is also not yet clear what role each of the two allegedly played in the robbery or whether either has any prior record.

Key Details Confirmed So Far

  • Victim: a 70-year-old woman
  • Stolen item: a gold necklace worn by the victim
  • Scene of the incident: Hallanchowk, Baglung Municipality Ward No. 2
  • Arrests: two persons taken into custody from Baglung Municipality
  • Named suspect: Rabin Kumar, 19, of Birgunj Metropolitan City Ward No. 20, Parsa
  • Confirming authority: DSP Rameshwar Twati, information officer, District Police Office, Baglung

The arrests were reported by RatoPati and Global Aawaj, both of which cited the District Police Office, Baglung, as their source.

A Reminder of the Risks Around Gold Ornaments

The robbery of gold necklaces from pedestrians, particularly elderly women, is a category of street crime that periodically surfaces in police records across Nepal. Gold ornaments are attractive targets precisely because they are valuable, easy to conceal and difficult to trace once removed from the wearer.

For elderly people, who often wear necklaces as part of their daily attire and may find it difficult to resist a sudden snatch, such incidents carry the risk of financial loss as well as physical harm. The Baglung case fits the broad pattern: a valuable ornament worn in a public bazaar area, an elderly wearer, and a targeted robbery rather than a break-in at a home.

What sets this case apart at this stage is the arrest of two suspects from within the same municipality where the incident took place, a development that suggests the investigation moved quickly from the reporting of the crime to identification and detention.

What Happens Next

As of the latest information available, police had not disclosed whether the stolen necklace has been recovered, nor the specific charges under which the two accused will be processed. The identity of the second suspect also remains unknown.

As with robbery cases generally, the district police are expected to carry the investigation forward before the matter proceeds through the legal process, and further specifics are likely to emerge only through official announcements from the District Police Office, Baglung.

For now, the confirmed picture is this: a 70-year-old woman lost her gold necklace at Hallanchowk, and within the same municipality, two persons, including 19-year-old Rabin Kumar of Birgunj, are in police custody on that charge, as confirmed by DSP Rameshwar Twati.
