Ronaldo suspended 30 days, fined 255 euros for leaving Portugal camp after row with coach Jorge Jesus

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined 255 euros, roughly 215 pounds, by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after he walked out of the national team's training camp last month following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The sanction was applied by the FPF's disciplinary council and took effect on October 1, the same day Portugal faced Denmark. Because 19 of the 30 days have already been served, the 41-year-old forward will not miss any of his country's upcoming matches.

A row over his role in the squad

The sequence of events began with a decision by Jorge Jesus to leave his captain on the bench for Portugal's Nations League match against Norway. According to reports carried by Rato Pati, that call led to a disagreement between the coach and the 41-year-old over Ronaldo's role in the team, and the forward subsequently left the national team's training camp altogether.

For a player of Ronaldo's standing, being left out of the starting lineup in a competitive international was itself a significant moment. He remains Portugal's captain and, at 41, continues to be part of the national squad, which made the decision to bench him against Norway a talking point in its own right. His choice to leave the camp entirely, however, escalated what might otherwise have remained an internal matter into a formal disciplinary case before the federation.

The sanction: a 30-day ban and a 255 euro fine

The FPF's disciplinary council settled on a two-part punishment. Ronaldo was suspended for 30 days and fined 255 euros, a sum equivalent to approximately 215 pounds. Nagarik News drew attention to the modest size of the financial penalty in its coverage, which described Ronaldo as a billionaire and asked why the action was taken in this form.

On paper, the 30-day suspension is by far the heavier of the two sanctions. In practice, its impact is limited almost entirely by the date it was applied. Rather than taking effect immediately and ruling Ronaldo out of future fixtures, the ban was backdated to October 1, the day of Portugal's match against Denmark. A 30-day suspension applied later in the calendar could have kept the captain out of Portugal's upcoming schedule, but the October 1 start date means the opposite is true.

Why the ban has already mostly been served

The key lies in the timeline. The suspension took effect on October 1, and 19 of the 30 days have already elapsed, leaving only 11 days of the ban outstanding. As Khabarhub reported, the arrangement means Ronaldo will not miss any upcoming Portugal games despite the length of the suspension.

In effect, the ban covers a stretch of time in which Ronaldo was already away from the national team setup following his exit from the camp, rather than a run of fixtures. When the remaining days lapse, he will be free to feature for Portugal again without having been barred from a single competitive match, a timing that removes what could otherwise have been a major sporting penalty for both the player and his country.

What comes next for Ronaldo and Portugal

The disciplinary case has now been resolved, but the questions it raised have not gone away. The dispute between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus centered on the forward's role in the team, and the decision to bench him for the Nations League meeting with Norway suggests that his place in the starting lineup is no longer automatic under the current head coach.

For the FPF, the episode was an uncomfortable one to manage, involving the most celebrated player in the country's football history and the national team's head coach. The outcome allows the federation to draw a line under the incident: the suspension has effectively been served, the fine has been imposed, and Portugal's upcoming matches will not be affected. Neither the council's decision nor the accompanying reports indicated how the differences between Ronaldo and Jesus have been resolved, leaving that relationship the most closely watched aspect of the affair as Portugal's Nations League campaign continues.
