Proposed Nepali Ambassador to India Nischalnath Pande Pledges Economic Diplomacy

Dr. Nischalnath Pande, proposed as Nepal’s resident ambassador to India, has pledged to steer the relationship between the two neighbours towards economic diplomacy that serves Nepal’s national interest. Speaking in Kathmandu in mid-October 2026, he said he would work to regularize high-level visits, accelerate the resolution of bilateral disputes and strengthen cooperation on economic ties, connectivity and border security.

A focus on economic diplomacy

Pande’s central commitment is to move beyond what he described as the traditional approach to Nepal-India relations and give economic cooperation a more prominent place. He framed that shift as a way to ensure the relationship serves Nepal’s national interest. The pledge puts practical cooperation and economic engagement at the heart of his proposed diplomatic agenda, rather than treating the longstanding relationship only in conventional terms.

The proposed envoy also identified stronger economic ties as a priority in their own right. His commitment points to a broader effort to make the bilateral relationship deliver more through economic engagement. Pande did not, in the commitments reported, set out specific projects, targets or a timetable. Instead, he outlined the direction he would pursue if appointed: closer economic ties shaped around Nepal’s interests and supported by more consistent engagement between the two countries.

Regular contact and faster dispute resolution

Regularizing high-level visits is another part of Pande’s proposed approach. His pledge signals that he wants senior-level exchanges to take place on a more regular basis. Such visits would be one avenue for maintaining dialogue and keeping bilateral issues on the agenda, although Pande’s reported commitment did not specify a schedule or identify particular officials who would take part.

He also pledged to expedite the resolution of disputes between Nepal and India. That commitment places the handling of unresolved bilateral matters alongside economic cooperation and high-level engagement as a key diplomatic priority. Pande did not detail which disputes he was referring to or provide a proposed process for addressing them. His stated objective, however, was to move their resolution faster, making dispute management an explicit part of his intended work as ambassador.

Connectivity and border security

Connectivity and border security were also included in Pande’s commitments. By naming both, he set out an agenda that extends beyond economic ties and diplomatic visits to include practical issues affecting the relationship between the neighbouring countries. The pledge to strengthen connectivity complements his stated emphasis on economic diplomacy, while border security remains a separate priority in the agenda he outlined.

Pande’s commitments therefore bring together several strands: a stronger economic focus, regular high-level contact, faster handling of bilateral disputes, improved connectivity and attention to border security. He presented these as connected elements of a relationship that should better serve Nepal’s national interest. His reported remarks did not provide detailed measures for delivering on each objective, but they establish the areas he says he would prioritize in the ambassadorial role.

The proposals were reported from Kathmandu in mid-October 2026, while Pande was being considered for the resident ambassador’s position in India. If appointed, he would take forward the priorities he has outlined through Nepal’s diplomatic engagement with its neighbour. For now, his pledge is a statement of intended direction: to make economic diplomacy more central and to pursue regular engagement and quicker progress on bilateral concerns, alongside cooperation on connectivity and border security.
