Nine Injured as Passenger Vehicle Overturns at Lagam Danda in Surkhet

Nine people, including a three-year-old child, were injured when a passenger vehicle travelling from Lamki in Kailali district to Achham lost control and overturned at Lagam Danda in Panchpuri Municipality-3, Surkhet, on Tuesday morning. The accident took place at around 10:30 am, according to the District Police Office, Surkhet. The injured were initially rushed to Panchpuri Basic Hospital, and those whose condition was found to be serious were referred onward to Surkhet for further treatment.

What Happened on the Lamki-Achham Route

The vehicle involved was a force gari bearing the registration number Karnali Province 02-001 Ja 0844, police said. It had been travelling from Lamki, a commercial town in Kailali district in the Terai plains, toward Achham, a hill district in Sudurpashchim Province, when the driver lost control at Lagam Danda in Panchpuri Municipality-3, in the western part of Surkhet district. The vehicle overturned at the spot, leaving nine of those travelling in it injured.

The District Police Office, Surkhet, confirmed the basic details of the accident, including the location, the time of the incident and the registration particulars of the vehicle. The office has been the primary source of information about the crash so far.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Location: Lagam Danda, Panchpuri Municipality-3, Surkhet
  • Time: Tuesday morning, at around 10:30 am
  • Vehicle: Force gari, registration number Karnali Province 02-001 Ja 0844
  • Route: From Lamki, Kailali, to Achham

Force gari vehicles, small and sturdy utility vans, are a common sight on the roads of mid-western and far-western Nepal. They are widely used to carry passengers on short and medium-length routes, particularly on sections where larger buses find it difficult to operate smoothly. In the vehicle's registration number, the "Ja" designation denotes a passenger vehicle under Nepal's vehicle registration system, while the "Karnali Province" prefix indicates the province in which the vehicle was registered.

The reason the driver lost control of the vehicle was not immediately clear. Police have so far described the incident as one in which the vehicle lost control and overturned, and further details about the exact circumstances leading up to the crash are awaited.

Rescue and Treatment of the Injured

Following the crash, all nine injured people were taken to Panchpuri Basic Hospital, the health facility serving the local area. Among the injured is a three-year-old child, according to the District Police Office, Surkhet. The presence of a young child among the passengers reflects how such vehicles are frequently used by entire families travelling between the Terai and the hill districts.

Health workers at Panchpuri Basic Hospital provided initial treatment to the injured. Those whose condition was serious were sent on to Surkhet for further treatment, police said. Referral of patients in serious condition from smaller health facilities along the highway to the better-equipped hospitals in Surkhet, whose district headquarters at Birendranagar is also the capital of Karnali Province, is a standard practice in cases of this kind.

The condition of the referred patients after they reached Surkhet, and whether any of them required further transfer to larger medical facilities, has not been made public yet. The names of the nine injured people have likewise not been disclosed in the reports available so far.

Context: Travel and Safety on the Hill Roads of Western Nepal

The Lamki-Achham route is one of the busy travel corridors linking the Terai plains of Kailali district with the far-western hill districts. Passenger vehicles on this route pass through Surkhet district, and sections of the road run along ridges and slopes where the terrain is steep. Lagam Danda, the site of Tuesday's accident, is one such location; the word "danda" in Nepali means a ridge or hill, a reflection of the kind of landscape the road traverses through Panchpuri Municipality.

Accidents involving passenger vehicles remain a recurrent concern on Nepal's hill roads, where carriageways are often narrow and winding and vehicles frequently carry passengers between district headquarters, market towns and villages. Tuesday's crash in Surkhet adds to the list of such incidents on the routes connecting the Terai with the mid and far-western hills, areas where residents routinely depend on small passenger vehicles like the force gari for their daily and long-distance travel.

News of the accident and the rescue effort was carried by RatoPati, Nagarik News and Gorkhapatra Online.

Further information, including updates on the condition of the injured and any official assessment of what caused the vehicle to lose control, is expected to become clearer as authorities at the District Police Office, Surkhet, release additional details.
