Home Minister Sudhan Gurung conferred the insignia of Inspector General of Police on newly appointed Nepal Police chief Manoj Kumar KC at a ceremony at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Kathmandu on Wednesday, formally marking KC’s elevation to the force’s top post. KC is Nepal Police’s 34th IGP, following the Cabinet’s decision to remove Dan Bahadur Karki from the position and transfer him as a special security adviser.

Ceremony at the Home Ministry

The insignia ceremony took place at the Ministry of Home Affairs, where Gurung presented the rank insignia to KC. The ministry had earlier scheduled the event for around 5:30 pm, according to spokesperson Anand Kafle.

Home Secretary Kedarnath Sharma had also been named to present the insignia. However, the Home Minister himself conferred the rank on KC at the ceremony. The event gave formal recognition to the appointment and the transfer of leadership at Nepal Police.

KC’s appointment makes him the 34th person to serve as Inspector General of Police. The insignia ceremony followed the Cabinet’s decision concerning Karki, who was removed as IGP and transferred to the role of special security adviser. The two decisions together marked a change in the leadership of the national police force.

Change in Nepal Police leadership

The Cabinet decision cleared the way for KC to take over as IGP. Karki’s transfer to a special security adviser position followed his removal from the police chief’s post. The ceremony on Wednesday then publicly marked KC’s assumption of the top rank.

The sequence involved both an administrative change and a formal presentation of rank: the Cabinet made the leadership decision, while the Home Ministry hosted the insignia ceremony. Gurung’s presentation of the insignia was the central event, with Sharma also identified in advance as a person set to take part in presenting the rank.

KC’s designation as the 34th IGP identifies his place in the succession of chiefs of Nepal Police. The ceremony was held at the ministry responsible for home affairs, rather than at a police facility, and brought the new chief’s appointment into a formal public setting.

Appointment and formal recognition

The main details of the change are clear: KC is the newly appointed IGP, Karki is no longer in the post and has been transferred as a special security adviser, and Gurung presented the insignia to KC in Kathmandu. The ministry spokesperson’s information about the planned time and Sharma’s expected role preceded the event, while the ceremony itself was carried out by the Home Minister.

The presentation of the insignia completed the formal observance associated with KC’s appointment. With the rank conferred, KC is identified as Nepal Police’s 34th Inspector General of Police, succeeding Karki after the Cabinet’s decision. The ceremony marked the transition at the head of the force without changing the reported details of Karki’s new advisory assignment.
